The United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders (the Bangkok Rules)

United Nations Rules for the Treatment of Women Prisoners and Non-custodial Measures for Women Offenders (the Bangkok Rules) were approved by the Third Committee of the General Assembly at its 65th session in New York on 15 October, 2010. The Bangkok Rules are new in the sense that they are the first specific UN standards for the treatment of women offenders. The Rules supplement but do not replace the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners and the UN Standard Minimum Rules for Non-custodial Measures (the “Tokyo Rules”).
