The Responsibility of States to Provide Legal Aid

The responsibility of states to provide legal assistance has been defined throughout this past century on several different bases, including moral, political, social-justice and legal terms. This paper will focus primarily on the legal obligations of states to provide legal aid arising from international human rights law. It should be noted that this paper does not attempt to assess the extent to which various states are in compliance with their international obligations respecting the provision of legal aid.
