The Proposed International Criminal Court: Implications for Correctional Services Canada

The purpose of this paper is to provide a brief guide to the potential impact of this Court on Correctional Service Canada. It will first present a very general introduction to the Rome Statute, then provide an overview of relevant provisions of the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act, including the new crimes and procedures introduced to Canada under the Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act. The final two sections of this paper will highlight the features of the ICC that are most likely to have an impact upon Corrections Service Canada, including international co-operation requirements and the main considerations involved if Canada were to offer to supervise prisoners convicted by the Court.
