The Parenting Experiences of Mothers in Conflict with the Law

This paper discusses the experiences of mothers in conflict with the law. It highlights the complex challenges they face in meeting their parenting obligations while going through a criminal justice process. It also considers the realities of stigma that both they, and their children, experience. Each stage of the criminal justice process from arrest to reintegration is considered and the barriers these mothers experience are discussed. Practical suggestions are made regarding the actions that various criminal justice actors can take to support mothers in meeting their parenting obligations, maintaining the parental bond and mitigating harm to the child.
