Ms. Laurie Wright

Assistant Deputy Minister, Public Law and Legislative Services

Laurie Wright is the Senior Assistant Deputy Minister for the Policy Sector. She was previously the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Public Law and Legislative Services Sector from 2013 to 2018. In that role, she was responsible for expert legal advice across the federal government in a variety of areas of public law, and for providing legislative services to all of government. She also supported the Minister of Justice in her policy responsibilities for judicial affairs and courts, human rights, access and privacy, official languages, and international private law.

Laurie came to the Department in 1994, and specialized in constitutional and international law. She joined the executive ranks of the Department in 2007 as first the Deputy Director General and then the Director General of the Constitutional, Administrative and International Law Section before becoming an Assistant Deputy Minister in 2013.

She completed her law studies at Queen’s and at Columbia University in New York, and clerked at both the Federal Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada.
