We are deeply saddened by the passing of our friend and colleague, Marcia V.J. Kran. Marcia was an extraordinary Canadian human rights lawyer whose career spanned more than four decades, during which she advanced democratic governance, access to justice, and the protection of fundamental freedoms around the world. Born in Manitoba, she earned her law degree from the University of Manitoba and went on to serve in roles with the United Nations, the Canadian Department of Justice, and as an expert member of the UN Human Rights Committee — the first Canadian elected to that body in over a decade. In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada for her advocacy and impact on international human rights.

Marcia will be remembered for her unwavering commitment to human rights, her mentorship of young lawyers, and her tireless work to strengthen the rule of law and democratic practices across the globe. She brought integrity, compassion, and deep expertise to every role, and her legacy of justice and dignity will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed.
