Is the UNTOC Working? An Independent Assessment of the Implementation and Impact of the UNTOC

Twelfth Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UNTOC Side Event
Date: 16 October 2024 | 14.00–14.50 CET
Venue: CR3 Vienna International Centre

Since the adoption of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC), organized crime has grown and diversified at an astonishing rate, with an ever-expanding range of criminal markets now defining its nature. This diversification and growth have made it challenging to assess the UNTOC’s impact on criminal markets.

From October 14 – 18, States Parties will unite in Vienna at the twelfth session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime to tackle the growing threat of organized crime.

The Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC) in partnership with the Institute for Security Studies and ICCLR are co-hosting a side event that seeks to reassess the international community’s collective approach to transnational organized crime, focusing on how to enhance the convention’s value as a key tool for legislation and cooperation.

GI-TOC will present a new flagship report examining the implementation and impact of the UNTOC. Experts will also share their insights on how the convention is shaping legislation, fostering international cooperation and affecting criminal markets. Attendees will gain access to the latest evidence and perspectives, aimed at strengthening global efforts to combat organized crime through the convention.
